St. Wolfgang in the austrian lake district (the Salzkammergut) is situated at the foot of the Schafberg mountain, where a rack railway, runs up the mountain. It is famous for the White Horse Inn (Hotel Weißes Rössl), the setting of the musical comedy in 1930.
The town and the lake are named after Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg, who, according to legend, built this pilgrimage church with a late Gothic altarpiece by Michael Pacher here in the late 10th century.
