Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut

The vacation paradise at Lake Wolfgang

One thing right right from the start: Lake Wolfgang in itself is a sight to behold. It looks like a painting from a whole palette of aqua tones framed by imposing mountain peaks (Schafberg, Zwölferhorn, Postalm) and the three lovely towns of St. Wolfgang, Strobl and St. Gilgen. You already knew that the two federal states of Salzburg and upper Austria share this natural jewel? Here you will find a few helpful information about Lake Wolfgang.

Ship ahoy at the Lake Wolfgang

The surface of the water glitters like a diamond when the sun breaks on it. A refreshing breeze gently strokes the skin and rocks the lush green of the surrounding meadows back and forth. A relaxing splash acoustically pushes all other sounds into the background, creating a feeling of carefree ease. On land or on water - at Lake Wolfgang, your heart sinks. Two federal states share this vacation idyll: Salzburg with St. Gilgen and Strobl and upper Austria with St. Wolfgang. All three places can be reached in a romantic way with the Lake Wolfgang boat trip. Those who set sail with "Emperor Franz Josef I" will experience true nostalgia on the water. The paddle steamer, which first sailed across Lake Wolfgang in 1873, is still part of the traditional Lake Wolfgang fleet.

Vacation for the whole family at Lake Wolfgang

There are many Austrian lakes, but the Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut is special: especially pure - drinking water quality, especially clear - in countless places you can see through the turquoise blue water to the bottom, especially romantic and simply magically beautiful! The "Abersee" - as it used to be called - is nestled between Schafberg, Zwölferhorn, Postalm and Falkenstein. This combination of lake and mountains in the midst of beautiful nature is a dream vacation destination for young and old at any time of the year. Whether you are a water sports enthusiast, a hiker, a cyclist,  a winter sports enthusiast or simply a pleasure seeker - anyone who has been here once is sure to become a repeat offender!

Leisurely hike
Schafberg cable car

Get on the top with the Schafberg cable car

The Schafbergbahn takes its passengers up the Schafberg within 35 minutes. A ride on Austria's steepest cog railroad is an experience you shouldn't miss! The Schafbergbahn has been in service since 1893 and has since ensured that even less athletic contemporaries can enjoy the sensational view from the summit of the Schafberg in St. Wolfgang.

Another way to get a magical overview from above is to climb the Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen - the summit of the Lake Wolfgang advent - or rather to conquer it comfortably. Because St. Gilgen's local mountain at 1,522 meters above sea level is barrier-free thanks to the Zwölferhorn cable car and the new, spacious gondolas, making it easy for everyone to reach. At the top, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the Salzkammergut in summer and winter. The Zwölferhorn panorama trail is also cleared and prepared in winter and is therefore ideal for a wonderful one-hour hike all year round.
